S/V Madimoo is a Philippines based 2014 Matrix Vision 450 catamaran for sale by owner

This Boat Owner requires financial settlement only ... trades will not be considered!!

S/V Madimoo is a Philippines based 2014 Matrix Vision 450 catamaran for sale by owner. This is my 44 foot catamaran, which I bought new in 2017, and then completed a voyage from Cape Town to Subic Bay, Philippines, with a crew of four, 1200 litres of diesel and frozen meat for three months.

We set out late winter from the southern Cape of South Africa and the weather was awful. We faced the Mozambique Current running at four knots on the bow with a stiff tail wind from the south. The following sea was steep and high and at times we hit 16 knots forcing us to take shelter in East London, halfway up the coast of South Africa. This was an excellent test for my new boat. She never blinked.

We sailed on through the Mozambique Channel, then to the Seychelles and onward via the Maldives to Malaysia. At no time did we deplete more than 400 litres of fuel, even though we had unfavorable winds, especially the leg from Maldives to the Straits of Malacca (1200 miles) in December. Apparently a less than ideal time to be sailing in an easterly direction. Malaysia to the Philippines was a piece of cake.

Matrix is a visonary catamaran builder in South Africa, and the Vision 450 has a striking wedge-shaped cabin top, modern plumb bows and a cockpit hardtop that fits the cabin top neatly. What's notable is the fairness of the finish on all fiberglass moldings and veneered furniture. It's clear the Matrix Vision 450 is a luxury yacht from the outset.

Under power, the 450 handles easily using the 2 X 39hp Yanmar 3JH5E diesel engines to compliment her steering. These engines have less than 800 hours on them. The boat will pivot in its own length and will maneuver in and out of any docking situation. Visibility from the raised helm is good. The 450 will cruise in flat water at 8 knots and has enough reserve power to hit almost 10 knots at full throttle.

The sail plan features a full-roach mainsail and an overlapping jib on a furler and will tack inside 90 degrees in 10 knots of wind. She also has a big Code Zero headsail which provides the horsepower to propel the boat to 9 knots in the span of a few boat lengths in just 12 knots of wind. This possible as the 450’s hulls are fairly narrow below the waterline and extend the full length overall, so the cat is easily driven and has high potential speeds. With 1250 square feet of working sail and 1650 square feet of reaching sail area on a displacement of only 11 tons, the rig has a sail area to displacement ratio that enhances sailing performance in all conditions.

On deck, the 450 has wide side decks and a well-designed foredeck area where you can sit out of the wind. The anchoring system is simple for one person to use and set far enough aft to keep the weight of chain and anchors near the boat’s center of gravity. There are handy lockers in the foredeck and aft around the cockpit that can be used for deck gear and to stow sheets and lines while underway. The covered cockpit has a large dinette that will seat eight adults for a meal. An outdoor fridge has been built in under the forward dinette seat. When on the hook, we use the SOLE Diesel 6.6KVA Generator (new in 2017) to power our 16000BTU Webasto air condioner.

The saloon and galley work well with the fridge-freezer near the cockpit door and the U-shaped galley to port. The inside dinette seats four on the curved bench and three more can join the party by sitting on stools or small portable chairs.

However… The time has come for me to sell S/V Madimoo. Alas, I need the money.

I can't compare her to other sailboats on an ocean crossing, since this was my first and only experience. But at no time did I feel at risk. She was immensely capable, solid on the water at 11 tons and with a surprising turn of speed, especially under the code zero sail.

I noted her self-sustaining ecology based on diesel, with big battery reserves, solar panels, generator, water maker, air conditioning, luxurious beds, hot water on tap and a washing machine.

I'll be sorry to see her go.
