Crowther 50' custom built catamaran located in Myrtle Beach, SC is a catamaran for sale by owner.
We are Jim & Julia Parker, sailing cat Papillon’s original/current owners. Crowther Multihulls, Pty., located north of Sydney, Australia most impressed us. Design features, Brett Crowther's can-do attitude and a proven record with designs built to withstand the rigors of Southern Ocean sailing sealed our deal. We conceived Papillon from the beginning as a safe, comfortable, easy-to-sail, live-a-board vessel, built to high standards, enabling travel anywhere in the World. Crowther Catamarans compiled an extensive and distinguished portfolio of Southern Ocean capable vessel designs. Catamaran offerings at mid-90s USA east coast shows were all about boats for Caribbean charter. Never intended to be a floating hotel, Papillon is a true owner’s blue water cruising yacht with comfortable accommodations for children and guests.
We contracted construction oversight to Advanced Multihulls (Dale Schneider, Inc.) of Bokeelia, Fl. Jim was the project manager, and we were both part of the crew. We were hands-on involved in every phase of design and construction of the vessel every day.
Papillon is cored with Core-Cell structural foam. Several densities were used to appropriately support high load areas and fastener penetrations. Various E-glass reinforcements were used for the structure. Hydrex-100 vinylester resin and West Systems epoxy were used throughout. Structural components and furniture were vacuum bagged to optimize resin loading and adhesion.
The structure is stiffened by GRP beams that run athwartship within the frames. The internal keelson in each hull and the underwing beam stiffen the structure alongship. Each door, window, hatch, and port opening is surrounded by a GRP frame to prevent distortion under stress. Each thru-hull has a solid epoxied-in liner. The inherent strength and stiffness of the vessel is reassuring when the seas kick up. Further reassurance stems from the specifications for chain plates, rudder shafts, winches, anchoring and electrical components to meet or exceed ABS Construction Standards.
All of Papillon's interior and exterior surfaces are finished to a high standard. Even the insides of lockers and bilges are smooth. Jim’s requirement during construction was that if he could reach it and run a finger over it, he’d better not come away bleeding. This translates into easy to clean surfaces that don't trap mold and mildew.
Papillon sports a strong and powerful rig and sail plan. The B&R rig is supported with Dyform wires. The mast is pre-bent and slightly raked. Support is derived from upper and lower shrouds and the forestay. Due to the B&R rig design, a backstay is not required. Wire terminations are Norseman-Gibb. As novice sailors, we asked Brett for an easy-to-handle, idiot-proof rig and after 48,000 nm, can confidently say he delivered. The sail plan that we’ve come to prefer consists of the 750 sq. ft. slab-reefed main, 824 sq. ft. roller furled screecher, and 460 sq. ft. roller furled genoa. We fly these sails in various configurations depending upon wind and sea state. An asymmetrical spinnaker, self-tacking jib and hank-on storm jib give us added flexibility to deal with every condition.
The rest, as they say, is history. It took 2½ years to complete the vessel to launch mid-2002. We began sailing her on the US east coast in 2003, while completing and testing various systems. We finally felt that we and Papillon were as ready as we’d ever be, and set sail from Fort Lauderdale for "The Canal" and never looked back.
All too swiftly, our 48,000 nm, ten year circumnavigation brought us back to Fort Lauderdale. Now, family responsibilities beckon. It's time to give back some of the unconditional support our families gave us during our adventure. It’s time for Papillon to show a new owner how rewarding exploring the planet can be. If you’ve read this far, we admonish you to cast off the dock lines and go where your dreams beckon. We wish you fair winds, calm anchorages, unbelievable sunsets, and new friends.
