| The Americat design began life as a 28-foot cat-rigged catamaran (Intercat 1500) originally designed by Rob Ladd and later owned by Bill Symons.
The Endeavour 30, Intercat 1500 and the Americat 3014 are
essentially all the same boat, and made in the same mold. The main difference being the Intercat and the Endeavour/Americat is a two foot extension in the stern /cabins and the sail plan. The boats appear the same from the companionway forward. Symons at one time licensed the molds to Endeavour. However with the changes in ownership of a reorganizing Endeavour the licensing agreement was terminated and the molds were transferred to America Cruising Yacht Corporation (a reorganized Irwin). One of the three ... the Endeavour 30, has a jib. The other two boats are Cat rigged boats which are easier to sail. As you step through the very broad companionway, the large cockpit merges with the main salon. The dinnette is "up" and offers wraparound seating. There are also two swivel chairs. Down and to port is the galley. Aft to port is the queen berth stateroom. To starboard and forward is the head and separate shower. Aft and to starboard is the other queen berth stateroom. | The Dean 400 was a new direction for
Dean Catamarans. This fast 40-foot cruising catamaran signals the
new trend in aerodynamic detailing, while matching performance with
unequaled accommodation in well-styled, high-volume hulls. Dean
Catamarans have drawn on their experience of constructing over 90
production catamarans to create a new boat that is fast, easy and
comfortable to sail. The Dean 400 has a reverse asymmetric hull
shape, meaning the wave build-up in the tunnel is significantly
reduced. Bridgedeck clearance is a minimum of 800 mm rising to 1.2
meters at the stern, and the inside of each hull features a wave
turnover flare further reducing the likelihood of pounding. In keeping
with modern trends, the hull and deck is a composite of Divinycell,
balsa core and quadriaxial glass, hand-laid and vacuum-bagged. Unlike most large catamarans the Dean 400 is built in one piece - the hulls - bridgedeck and cockpit - deck - and boasts a solid laminate below the waterline. As a result both hull and deck are light and tough. The sail design incorporates a large-roach, fully-battened mainsail along with a roller furling headsail set on a well-raked mast - mast cap being 3.2 meters aft of the foot. The wide staying base and outboard shrouds give maximum support to the 19.5-meter rig, which is easy to handle having no running backstays. The Dean 400's performance belies her exceptional accommodation even by catamaran standards. There is two-meter headroom throughout. The saloon, galley and nav station are elegantly combined in an open plan arrangement while the boat has, four spacious cabins and two heads. The cockpit extends the social area of the saloon creating 20 square meters of indoor-outdoor living without affecting the sailing functions of the vessel as there is a working cockpit for sail control and the twin wheel steering. Semi-balanced rudders give good maneuverability, quick tacking and fast acceleration out of a turn.
