The Gemini Legacy 35 is a shallow-draft cruising catamaran produced in the United States since 1981. The design centers on a narrow, 14‑foot beam that permits use of standard monohull slips and travel lifts while still providing interior volume comparable with larger monohulls. The hull form and rig are intended to deliver fast, level sailing with minimal heel, and the 34‑inch (2 ft 11 in) draft enables anchoring in very shallow water and beaching in places such as the Bahamas and the Florida Keys.
The Legacy 35 was developed by Tony Smith and later redesigned by Marlow Hunter in consultation with Smith; the redesign introduced fixed keels and twin inboard diesel engines in place of the earlier central Sillette drive leg. Construction is conventional for production cruising yachts of its era: solid fiberglass hull lay‑up of mat and woven roving with polyester resin, and decks cored with end‑grain balsa to increase stiffness. The deck and cockpit ergonomics were laid out to support short‑handed operation — all lines lead to the cockpit — and a large cockpit and open stern/transom are part of the layout for easy access to docks and family entertaining. The mainsheet traveler is located on the hardtop above the cockpit, and pilothouse windows afford broad, nearly 360‑degree visibility from the salon.
Owner listings and brokerage examples illustrate common equipment packages and upgrades found on surveyed boats: air conditioning (one listing notes 20,000 BTU), generator, solar panels, watermaker, dinghy davits, upgraded chartplotter electronics and Corian countertops. A 2016 Legacy 35 presented for sale was described as well equipped with those systems, and another hull (“Neptune”) has a documented charter history. Propulsion on many boats is by economical twin ~15 HP Yanmar diesels as noted in owner literature. The cumulative attributes — shallow draft, modest beam, cockpit‑centered sail control and straightforward construction — define the Legacy 35’s practical credentials for cruising in shallow coastal and island waters.
