OWNER’S VERSION

The Catana 471 is a well known performance catamaran from the Catana boatyard in Canet-en-Rousillon France designed by Christophe Barreau. It is considered the “sweet spot” of the Catana range for the right mix of performance, accommodations and ocean crossing sea keeping abilities with many vessels completing circumnavigations.

MODEL / HULL # CONSIDERATIONS FOR BUYERS

For those buyers looking at 471s, it is important to know that these boats were built in a semi-custom fashion up until 2004 when they were renamed to the Catana 47 Ocean Class, which saw several higher end components being swapped out, such as Harken deck gear to Lewmar, while carbon fibre masts became an option vs. being installed as standard previously. They did upgrade the bimini top, but the newer design has more limited solar panel installation options. Most – not all – of the late model Catana 47 Ocean class from 2004 to 2007 were configured for charter in cooperation with Dream Yacht charters.

Many of the earlier pre-2004 built 471s had Espace carbon fibre masts that have known issues for corrosion at the mast base (some have been cut shorter as a result), hydraulic steering and aluminum / stainless fuel and water tanks again prone to corrosion and with significantly less tankage volumes. Many hulls have also just one central powered winch in the cockpit.

After 3 years of pre-purchase studying and a global search, we purchased Element which has the desired massive diameter Alucarbon carbon fibre mast, mechanical steering, stainless diesel tanks and plastic water tanks totalling 200 gallons (800 l) each and 3 powered Harken winches. It was just one of two vessels that were available for sale back in early 2015 with this configuration. Element also has a factory optioned bowsprit with additional furler and a rare cockpit upgrade to include the flip-up seats in the cockpit like a 472, which are very popular with crew and guests without the limited head room galley layout and rear facing navigation station typical of the 472.

LOCATION

Pangkor Marina and boatyard in Lumut Malaysia is a duty and tax free port for international yachts, is the gateway to SE Asia cruising with potential ports of call in Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines while also being a hub for incoming and departing sailing rallies. The Sail East Malaysia Rally departs Pangkor in late March / early April and meets up with the Sail Indonesia Rally in July which returns to Pangkor in late October.

Our family took part in the 2019 Sail Indonesia Rally which exceeded all expectations and offered fantastic scuba diving opportunities, attendance to cultural activities / events and great socialization with fellow international sailors. Lumut is just 2 day sails from the popular yachting destination of Langkawi and its an additional overnight sail to Phuket Thailand.

Element is moored in Pangkor Marina because moorage charges (650 USD/month) with unlimited power and water are significantly less than Langkawi and Thailand with the ability to haul-out the yacht for survey. Cost of living while in Malaysia is also less expensive with quality meals costing between $3 and $5.

All interior furniture and flooring is constructed of foam-cored sandwich for lightness and rigidity. Cabinetwork and inner surfaces are Cherry wood veneer trimmed in teak using the Oberflex process (maintenance free). Ceilings are isothermal and ultra light, with easy to clean soft touch vinyl covered access panels in bright ivory surrounded by beige Alcantra trim. All floors are in teak veneer with black grooves utilizing the Stratifil process (maintenance free). Interior brightness has been enhanced with the installation of 7 additional LED lighting fixtures to the salon and galley.

MAST & RIGGING

Alucarbon Carbon Fibre Mast (21.50 m Air Draft) [Same mast as installed on early Catana 50 (slightly shorter) and is significantly larger in diameter than most earlier Catana 471 an 472 models]
Aluminum White lacquered Boom, Cross-beam, davits and folding bowsprit (factory option) by JP Marechal.

All Standing Rigging completely replaced and upgraded to include Hi-Mod compression Terminals (similar to Stalok, but rated better by practical sailor magazine) to allow for wire stay replacement in isolated global locations without the need for a swaging machine (Pro-Rigging, Mallorca Spain, Sept 2016). All Running Rigging replaced (2015/2016).

Catamaran Inventory

Construction

  • Catana 471s were built with two outer hull molds and one deck mold that were vacuum bagged using vinylester resin and cored with PVC closed cell foam with unidirectional cloth for the outer laminate & Twaron aramid cloth for the inner laminate over the entire hull.
  • The daggerboard trunks were over engineered to be seven times stronger than the daggerboards.
  • All of the structural bulkheads are cored with Nidacore honeycomb with carbon fibre reinforcement on both sides.

Accommodations

  • Three double cabins with large berths and extra large opening "Moonlight" ports continue the trend of offering a superb sea view from the berths, as well as from the Owner's bathroom located forward in the starboard hull.
  • The hull passageways are fitted out with a variety of generous cabinetry and storage areas with additional interior shelving being added to the stateroom closets.
  • All interior furniture and flooring is constructed of foam-cored sandwich for lightness and rigidity.
  • Cabinetwork and inner surfaces are Cherry wood veneer trimmed in teak using the Oberflex process (maintenance free).
  • Ceilings are isothermal and ultra light, with easy to clean soft touch vinyl covered access panels in bright ivory surrounded by beige Alcantra trim.
  • All floors are in teak veneer with black grooves utilizing the Stratifil process (maintenance free).

Salon

  • The raised salon of the Catana 471 with its forward facing wrap around navigation station and linear aft facing galley comfortably accommodates up to eight people allowing panoramic ocean views that may be enjoyed while seated around the folding salon table.
  • Two forward opening hatches combined with the sliding glass door and window aft provide excellent salon ventilation, especially while cooking.
  • Cushions of the U-shaped Salon, are constructed using high-resilience, extra thick Bultex foam, for optimum comfort with large storage areas beneath.
  • Cushions have recently been re-covered with red leatherette for ease of cleaning.
  • Interior brightness has been enhanced with the installation of 7 additional LED lighting fixtures to the salon and galley.

Galley

  • Linear shaped galley facing aft, with large kitchen countertop in "starry night" Corian with cover for a sink and the stove adding further valuable counter space.
  • There are numerous storage cabinets, a hidden trash can compartment with double stainless sinks.
  • The 200 L top loading fridge with sliding storage baskets has thick insulation, with anti-condensation facing and double sealant on the opening.
  • The Frigoboat refrigeration systems are extremely efficient in the tropics with electronic thermostat controls, utlizing keel cooled heat exchangers attached to each hull as Catana original factory equipment.
  • The 100 L Stainless steel deep freeze is custom fitted on the galley port side.
  • The stainless double sinks have a mixer tap with shower faucet for fresh water (hot and cold) and drain tap for water maker.

Cockpit

  • The cockpit of a Catana 471 is vast.
  • The two offset and raised helm stations make sail trimming easy and allow the helmsman to keep an eye on the boat and its crew at all times.
  • Mainsail hoisting, reefing and dousing are all handled by a central Harken 53 electric speed winch on the aft beam keeping crew safe within the confines of the cockpit without the need to go to the mast.
  • The wide flush side decks remove slip, trip and fall hazards as there are no ropes or hatches to stumble upon while moving forward at sea.
  • The North Sails polymer trampoline is extremely comfortable under foot when hoisting the spinnaker or weighing anchor and is a great place to relax at sea in modest weather conditions.
