S/V Today (formerly TnA) is a Port Aransas, TX based 1997 Manta 40 catamaran for sale by owner.
Manta catamarans were built in Florida from the late 1990s to the late 2000s. The Manta is unmistakably recognizable from a distance with her trademark high bows and a massively curved integrated forward crossbeam. This is a true blue water vessel that is comfortable, spacious, and a real pleasure to sail. Tons of solar power all refrigeration and DC without the use of the engines.
Manta catamarans have developed and maintained a loyal following of knowledgeable cruisers. These yachts are known for their sound construction, excellent performance, and ease of single-hand sailing.
The Manta’s broad, 21 foot beam and narrow hulls spread beneath a “spaceship” pod are typical of French cat design. Her width is intended to give her stability against the lateral press of the sails, and her narrow hulls are designed to slice rather than plow the water.
The length, but not the interior, of the Mantas has been growing, a good sign that the builder, Pat Reischmann, concerns himself with the Holy Grail of cats: low weight, especially in the bow and stern, where loads produce pitching. The Manta has grown a pleasing stern with sugar scoop, step-down transoms. The transoms are cut away inboard at the waterline for easy access to and from the dinghy.
Today also benefits from a strengthened hull, made with Nida-core honeycomb and vacuum-bagged and reinforced with unidirectional E-glass at high stress points. Some cat builders use lighter, higher-tech, and more expensive materials like foams and aramid fibers, but the Manta builders have tried to strike the balance between solid construction and cost. Manta hulls have molded in keels that carry their draft to 3 feet 8 inches.
Our sailing plans were postponed by a decade or two with the pending arrival of our little blessing (baby boy). We purchased this boat in Puerto Rico in April 2022, and sailed it about 1850 nautical miles back to Port Aransas. We are very excited to have a baby boy inbound, but that means we have to let our other baby (catamaran) go. We’ll circle back to sailing and adventure later in life, but for now, we are all in on parenting and career. I hope this catamaran brings the next family as much joy and adventure as it did ours.
